Laguna is a documentary essay dedicated to the memory of the director’s elder daughter, Ina
Marija Bartaitė. In the film, Šarūnas Bartas travels with his youngest daughter, Una Marija, to
Mexico’s Ventanilla Lagoon on the Pacific coast – the place where Ina Marija spent her last
holiday with her father. Immersed in the life of the local community and attuned to the rhythms
of surrounding nature, father and daughter reflect on loss and the fragility of life.
Šarūnas Bartas
Šarūnas Bartas was born in Šiauliai, Lithuania, in 1964. After graduating from VGIK film school
in Moscow, he founded Studija Kinema in 1989 – the first independent film studio in Lithuania.
His very first films received critical acclaim. Three Days, The Corridor, and Few of Us
established a distinctive, sensitive cinematic world that resonates in Peace to Us in Our Dreams
and continues in his latest work, Laguna. Retrospectives of Bartas’s films have been held at the
Centre Pompidou in Paris as well as in Poland, Spain, Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, Peru, Portugal,
Belgium, and many other countries. In recent years, At Dusk premiered in Cannes (Directors’
Fortnight and Official Selection), Frost was also presented in Cannes, and his latest feature, Back
to the Family, premiered in Rotterdam.
