Johanna falls passionately in love with her teacher and pours her feelings onto paper. A year
later, after the emotions have faded, her mother and grandmother discover what she wrote. The
teenager’s raw honesty is both shocking and revealing of her literary talent. As Johanna debates
whether to publish the text, she and her loved ones reflect on intimacy and the fragile line
between fantasy and reality – for in love, even the smallest glance or touch carries immense
weight. Dreams is the final part of Dag Johan Haugerud’s trilogy on sexuality, and the first
Norwegian film ever to win the Berlinale’s Golden Bear.
Dagas Johanas Haugerudas
Born in 1964, Dag Johan Haugerud studied film and theatre in Sweden and Norway, and also
worked as a librarian. He achieved great success in Scandinavia as both a writer and a director,
with his films winning multiple Norwegian national awards. Following the success of I Belong,
the director also began to attract international attention. In 2020, Beware of Children premiered
in Venice, and at the Gothenburg Film Festival it won the Dragon Award for Best Nordic Film
and Best Actor. Haugerud’s films are distinguished by their minimalist means and vivid,
skillfully written dialogue. All three films of this trilogy – Love / Sex / Dreams – have been
presented at Scanorama.
