A thirteen-year-old girl lives with her mother and her elder sister Katia. Even though she lives in an extremely brutal environment — her mother, who drinks a lot, is a prostitute, while Katia becomes a stripper and starts taking drugs — the girl remains very innocent and naive. Neglected by those around her, she spends her free time tidying the family flat, filling in colouring books, and watching animal documentaries. However she mainly wanders the streets of Amsterdam, indulging her favorite pastime: people-watching. Through this complex character, “Katia’s sister” treats a raw and harsh subject with tenderness and a light touch.
Mijke de Jong was born in 1959. In 1983 she took a diploma from Netherlands Film and Television academy. She directs television drama, features, short films, documentaries and theatre plays. About her latest film Mijke de Jong says: “I could make films about girls of thirteen all my life, too old for dolls, too young for love, too young for mature men. By taking Katia’s sister’s hand, I could talk about the things that really matter: loneliness, anxiety, love”.
