It’s a film about Norway’s ever-controversial literature Nobel Prize winner Knut Hamsun. The film deals with Hamsun’s experiences during World War II, when he supported Nazi ideology and his trial. This film is based on „The Trial Against Hamsun“ by Torkild Hansen, screenplay was written by famous Swedish poet and writer Per Olov Enquist. Shot in Norway and Germany in 1995.

Jan Troell was born in 1931 in Sweden. He worked as a teacher for nine years and was making his first short movies and documentaries. Troell international breakthrough came with his epic film version of Wilhelm Moberg’s novel, „The Emigrants“ (1971) and „The New land“ (1972). Fallowing its success in the USA, Troell and Ullmann were invited to Hollywood, where Troell directed „Zandy’s Bride“ (1974). He found the experience unpleasant. Troell returned to Sweden and made the film „Bang!“ (1977) in response to his own artistic crisis. Troell made his comeback as a director with his 1991 film „Il Capitano“, a thriller about a couple on the run.
