Sixty-year-old Mrs. Hau was born in a cave. She grew up among the Rục people on the

coast of Vietnam. The outside world only learned of this community in 1959, and today

only a few hundred members still speak the Rục language. In the film, Mrs. Hau passes

her native tongue on to her grandchildren and shares with them the wisdom, folklore,

and history of her vanishing people, while the filmmakers capture her journey through

the living natural world on 16 mm film and soundtrack. One of the creators is Truong

Minh Quý, who presented his film Viet and Nam at Cannes in 2024.

Truong Minh Quý’s films have been presented at international festivals and exhibitions

including Locarno, New York, Rotterdam, and Busan. In 2017, he won the main award

at VideoBrasil in São Paulo. His second feature film, The Tree House (2019), was

recognized at the Locarno Film Festival and later screened at many of the world’s

leading festivals. His film Viet and Nam premiered at Cannes and was also shown in

Lithuania.

Nicolas Graux

Since 2020, Nicolas Graux has been collaborating with Vietnamese director Trương

Minh Quý, and their short film Porcupine (2023) was selected for the Rotterdam Film

Festival. He is currently working on his first feature-length fiction film, Twelve Months of

Winter.
