As a painter, Francisco de Goya (played by Donatas Banionis) has attained wealth and reputation, and his brilliant skills opened all the doors, even the ones of the palace of the king Carl IV. Goya enjoys the fame, but a sudden meeting with the locals in a random tavern in Madrid shakes his world. With a brush in his hand, the painter steps up against the flaws of the community and the church. The paintings of the noble are being replaced by the images of darkness and confusion.

Konrad Wolf, an East German film director, studied at Gerasimov Institute of Cinematography in Moscow. In 1959 his film Sterne won the Special Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival. His 1961 film Professor Mamlock was entered into the 2nd Moscow International Film Festival and awarded the Golden Prize. In 1971 a Special Prize of the same Film Festival was awarded to Wolf’s film Goya or the Hard Way to Enlightenment.
