In the local, borderline slang “piggies” mean prostituting teenagers. Children who sell themselves not only for money, but most often for anything: cosmetics, clothes, electronic devises.
The hero of the “Piggies” is Tomek, a sixteen-year-old boy who lives with his parents close to the border. One day Tomek discovers the secret of his school friend, Ciemny. Ciemny and some other 14 to 16 year-old boys sell themselves to German paedophiles. Marta is Tomek’s girlfriend. Tomek tries to earn some money to make her dreams come true...
“It is a kind of social drama, applying widely-understood paradocumental methods. Authentic environment, real places, real people, sometimes real events. Most of the films were filmed with long lenses, which gave an illusion of documental observation”, – says “Piggies” director Robert Gliński.
Robert Gliński (b. 1952, Warsaw) studied architecture at Warsaw University (1975) and direction at PWSFTViT in Łodź (1979), where he is currently professor and rector. He has made a number of documentaries and several stage productions. His debut “Sunday Pranks” (1987) brought him a Gold Ducat and the FIPRESCI Prize at the Mannheim IFF. This was followed by the award-winning films “Swan Song” (1988), “Supervision” (1990), “All That Really Matters” (1992), and “Mother of Her Own Mother” (1996). For his film “Hi, Tereska” (2001) he received the Special Jury Prize and FIPRESCI Award at the Karlovy Vary IFF, and other domestic and international awards. “Piggies” was selected for competition in Karlovy Vary Film festival as well.
